TAYLOR POPPELL, DVM
Practice Limited to Small Animal Surgery
Dr. Taylor Poppell is a small animal surgeon with advanced training in orthopedic, soft tissue, neurologic, and minimally invasive procedures. A Tallahassee native, Dr. Poppell discovered his passion for surgery early; working at a busy local practice during high school where he was drawn to the complexity and impact of surgical care.
He completed his pre-veterinary studies at Florida State University in 2013 and graduated with Honors from Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2018. Following vet school, he pursued a rotating internship at BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Tampa, Florida, followed by a dedicated surgery internship at Memphis Veterinary Specialists (MVS). He was subsequently invited to remain at MVS for a competitive three-year residency in small animal surgery.
Over the course of his residency, Dr. Poppell received rigorous, hands-on training in advanced fracture repair, elective orthopedics, thoracic and abdominal surgery, spinal procedures, and minimally invasive techniques. He completed his residency in 2023.
After more than five years of specialty training, Dr. Poppell returned home to Tallahassee to found Red Hills Veterinary Surgery — a mobile surgical service committed to making high-quality care more accessible. RHVS was built on the belief that surgery should strengthen the relationship between families and their primary veterinarian — not disrupt it.
Dr. Poppell’s clinical interests include complex fracture repair, TPLO and patellar luxation correction, and surgical management of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). Outside of surgery, he’s an avid outdoorsman who enjoys bird hunting, boating, and spending time with his wife, Cilla; their son, James; and their English Cocker Spaniel, Tibby.
He is honored to provide expert, compassionate care to pets and their families across North Florida and South Georgia.
